As the new year dawned, I read a report about consideration of human-like rights for robots, and discussion of requirements for insurance on robots and the inclusion of a “kill switch” in the European Parliament, and as the year has progressed, discussion of the role robots, artificial intelligence, digitization, and automation play in technological unemployment has become more common.
More importantly, the human backlash is clearly underway. In the USA, a right wing President is in office, actively promoting returning manufacturing jobs to America. In Europe, there’s the debate in the EU Parliament, and even anger about robots and jobs in the Netherlands.
Robots, and these automation technologies are clearly being cast as threats to humans, and the resulting fear is feeding populism, and nationalism.
We are in Phase One of Machine World.
